Annastsia Wakon wants NGOs not to pretend

Non- Governmental Organisation (NGO) groups have been urged to place emphasis on their core business and not delve in a lot of activities.

Anastasia Wakon of Lae's Women and Children Support Centre said often NGO groups tried to do so many things, which strangled themselves, doing this.

"We should not pretend," she told the NGO Budget Forum in Port Moresby. We must make sure our core activities are achieving results before taking on additional responsibilities."

She said NGOs were often tempted into networking arrangements only to find that they cannot keep up with the demands as well as sustain their own activities.

Ms Wakon said experience has shown that when NGOs concentrated on their core business, it enabled them to excel.

"That is no secret. We all know that the basis of our work is what we advocate and as such, we should uphold these objectives," said Ms Wakon.

She added that NGOs need to constantly look at themselves and see how realistic, they can be, if they are to perform their roles in the communities.

Ms Wakon said he group has been fortunate in gaining several milestones as a result of their networking and partnership approaches.

She also said NGOs should also refrain from competing for funds and back stab each other.

"That is the greatest hurdle to the growth of the NGOs. We have to avoid this at all costs," said Ms Wakon.
