The Autonomous Region of Bougainville (ABG) is targeting Human Rights as its major project. Lawyer and senior staffer Chris Siriosi said ABG believed through constant education, people can be receptive to the rights issue and change their attitudes.

"This is one of our first objectives, pushing the rights issues. The more people are aware of their rights, the easier it will be for us to address law and justice issues," said Mr Siriosi. He said the Law and Justice team has been involved in a number of initiatives to make the AMT a part of the ABG administration.

Through this process the AMT can be a part of the administrative machinery and can work closely with other sectors.

"We believe we have the necessary plans and policies, however this has to be part of the administration. That way, it is easier to approach law and justice programs effectively," said Mr Siriosi.

He also said the region also has a vibrant and a proactive NGO, Church and Civil Society group who are abreast in their own advocacy and awareness work.

Mr Siriosi said the challenge was synchronizing all these to work closely with the administration, who have identified Human rights as a key activity to pursue.
