The Constitution establishes the Office of the Chief Magistrate. The Judicial and Legal Services Commission (the Commission) appoints a Chief Magistrate to a fixed term of six [6] years. The Chief Magistrate is enjoined by the Constitution to administer the inferior courts. The Chief Magistrate is further charged by law under the Magisterial Service Act to be responsible for the effective management of the Service's resources and posting of magistrates to locations.

By virtue of the Office the Chief Magistrate is also an ex officio district court magistrate Grade V.
